Hope Passed Her Therapy Dog Certification!

After nearly four years of training, classes, practice, and more treats than either of us would like to admit, Hope has officially passed her therapy dog certification!

If you've met Hope, this probably doesn't come as a huge surprise. She's always been a people dog. She loves attention, happily greets just about everyone she meets, and firmly believes that every visitor arrives specifically to see her.

The certification process, however, involves a little more than being friendly.

Over the past several years, Hope and I have worked with trainers, attended classes, and practiced the skills needed for therapy work. We've worked on everything from manners and obedience to staying calm in busy environments and interacting appropriately with people of all ages.

There were definitely moments when training felt easy and moments when it felt like we were both still learning. Fortunately, Hope is patient with me.

Passing the certification test felt like a big milestone because it represents years of work together. More importantly, it opens the door to opportunities that I'm really excited about.

As an educator, I've spent much of my career helping students learn and grow. Now Hope gets to join me in a different way. I'm looking forward to exploring opportunities with schools, libraries, senior living communities, and other organizations where a friendly dog might bring a little extra comfort, encouragement, or joy.

I have a feeling some of Hope's favorite activities will involve children reading books to her. She has always been an excellent listener.

I'll be updating my website soon with more information about therapy dog visits and service opportunities.

For now, we're celebrating one very good dog who worked hard for her certification and is ready for her next adventure.

And yes, she received extra treats after passing her test. I think she would tell you that was the most important part.
