The question is, can our resourceful students utilize the materials at their disposal to craft a contraption capable of rescuing those elusive treasures? In the Furniture Building Challenge, students in grades 3-5 are tasked with designing and constructing functional furniture pieces using only cardboard. Due to the use of x-acto knives, this challenge is tailored for older students, fostering creativity, craftsmanship, and practical problem-solving skills.

Volcanoes, hurricanes, tornadoes, etc. Activities would center around one or more natural disasters and include hands-on maker challenges.

Students learn about civil engineering and work through each step of the engineering design process in two mini-activities that prepare them for a culminating challenge to design and build the tallest straw tower possible, given limited time and resources.

How does mass affect momentum in a head-on collision? Students explore this question and experience the open-ended engineering design process as if they are the next-generation engineers working on the next big safety feature for passenger vehicles. They are challenged to design or improve an existing passenger compartment design/feature so that it better withstands front-end collisions, protecting riders from injury and resulting in minimal vehicle structural damage.

Students are given the engineering challenge to design and build dog houses that shelter a (toy) puppy from the heat—and to create them within material, size and cost constraints.
